Can the Plastic-Handled Stainless Steel Tailor Scissors Normal Use in Extremely Cold Environments?

August 26, 2026

Is it possible for the plastic-handle stainless steel tailor scissors to break when used in extremely cold environments? Have buyers of stainless steel scissors encountered such situations before? How does the stainless steel scissors factory face such problems? Below is a practical case study to see how we solved such as problems.

The article is a bit long. If some friends who deal in stainless steel scissors can read it patiently, it may be helpful for their business development.

As we all know, plastic products become hard and brittle at low temperatures. Will the plastic of plastic-handled stainless steel tailor scissors be affected when used in very cold environments? That’s for sure, but the well-crafted plastic-handled stainless steel tailor scissors can be used normally in very cold environments, the plastic handle will not break even though in extremely cold weather.

Last year, we received a complaint from a Middle Eastern client that the handle of a pair of scissors had broken. This client specializes in the business of clothing materials and tailoring tools, and has a deep understanding of tailoring tools. Their company purchases a large amount of tailoring goods from China every year to provide to their local clothing and sewing factories. As a professional manufacturer of stainless steel scissors in Yangjiang, China, we are honored to become their supplier of stainless steel tailor scissors, and provide OEM production services for their stainless steel tailor scissors.

Our scissors manufacturing factory had over 10 years of experience in producing this pair of scissors. The material of the blades of this large 10 inch tailor scissors is 3.0mm thick high hardness stainless steel, and the handle is brand new ABS. ABS is a hard and tough plastic, how can it easily break? According to the client’s explanation, they had not received any complaints from their downstream customers about this pair of scissors on a regular basis, and only had such complaints in winter. Our client said that winter in their country is very cold, with some places reaching temperatures as low as minus 30 degrees Celsius.

We certainly attached great importance to customer complaints, and we asked them to send us some samples of scissors with broken handles for our research. After our technical team’s repeated research on the samples and combined with the client’s relevant instructions on the use of scissors, we had identified the root cause. One of the main force points on one side of this pair of scissors happens to be at the connection between the stainless steel blade and the plastic handle. This area appears thick on the outside, but is actually limited by the grip of the handle. When injecting the blade into the handle mold, the position where it can fit into the handle is very short. In general environments, ABS plastic is hard and tough, and the plastic at the point of force on the scissors does not have any impact during use. However, in extremely cold environments, the toughness of ABS plastic becomes less good, and even a bit hard and brittle.

When the scissors frequently opened and closed to cut fabrics in the clothing factory, because the stainless steel sheet on the point of force embedded in the plastic was relatively short, the connection between the stainless steel sheet and the handle experienced a cracking condition, caused the stainless steel blade to break off from the plastic.

The cause of the scissors handle fracture had been identified, but how could it be resolved? If the embedded length of the cutting blade is extended, it is easy to cause the stainless steel cutting blade to be exposed during injection molding. In Yangjiang, there are many manufacturers who made this type of scissors, but all factories used the same method to handle the connection between the scissors blade and the grip. However, they may not had encountered the situation of the scissors handle breaking when used in very cold environments, or they may had encountered it before, but in the end, it could not be fundamentally solved. So we could not find any case studies to refer to, let alone any scissors samples that had already solved this problem.

Faced with such a situation, our technical team could only research countermeasures on our own. After multiple adjustments and tests, our technical team had finally found a feasible solution that can ensure that the force point on the handle would not break due to the influence of the cold environment, and that the stainless steel would not be exposed due to the lengthening of the scissor blades.

We extended the stainless steel scissor blade towards the handle grip position and made the top of the scissor blade into an arc-shaped angle according to the shape of the handle grip, this handling can disperse the force at the force point onto the grip of the handle, which not only disperses the force but also makes the adhesion between the stainless steel sheet and the handle tighter. Theoretical data was feasible and testing was not a problem, but actual mass production was not easy. This required precise insertion points for injection molds and scissor blades, and the skills of the workers operating the injection molding machine should be just right.

Tailor scissors with reinforced handle

After our technical team’s repeated adjustments and improvements to the mold, we ultimately overcame the difficulties and successfully solved these problems fundamentally. In the end, after our improvements, the handle of this stainless steel tailor scissors became even more perfect and there were no more instances of breakage. According to later customer feedback, their downstream customers conducted destructive tests on our scissors, they damaged the entire scissors, but the previously mentioned location did not show any breakage. After the issue with this handle was resolved, coupled with the powerful functionality of this scissors, it became more accepted by the market of our client and helped our client gain more market share in their local area.

Scissors are tools that may not be perfect, but their functionality must be guaranteed. A reliable pair of scissors must be able to adapt to different usage environments, and tailor scissors must be able to cut all clothing fabrics. As a professional manufacturer of scissors in Yangjiang, China, our tailor scissors, regardless of size, must undergo actual testing to cut thick denim fabric before leaving the factory.
